The Favored Will Have No Fear
Jonathan stared at Clara without blinking, afraid that if he did, he wouldn't be able to see her again when he opened his eyes.
Clara asked, "Jonathan, I'm a ghost now...aren't you afraid of me? You were running so fast just now that your legs must have flown off."
Jonathan felt his vision blur and couldn't help but take off his glasses. He clenched his hand into a fist and placed it on his lips, forcing a smile. "Ha...you're just being mischievous again, aren't you? That female ghost just now, was it your idea?"
"Did you scare Martin and the others too, huh?" Clara grinned. "Well, I was just thinking of you guys. That seductive ghost sister was so beautiful..."
Before she could finish her sentence, Jonathan suddenly hugged her tightly.
"Clara, are you okay over there?" Jonathan's voice was hoarse as he used his fingertips to wipe away a hint of moisture from the corner of his eye where no one could see.
Clara hugged Jonathan back and patted his back. "Jonathan, I'm fine, really."
"The judge has been good to me too. He even secretly took me out. Those old guys in the underworld couldn't do anything about it."
"I went to register today, and they said they would find a good family for me to reincarnate into. Guess what I chose?" Clara laughed.
Jonathan's throat tightened and he swallowed the bitterness in his throat. He asked with a smile, "What did you choose?"
"I said I want to go back to the Murray family and be the youngest daughter again. But you know the current acting Yama, that old man. He got so angry and said, 'Nonsense! Your mother is already in her seventies. How do you want to be reincarnated?'"
"When I thought about it, I realized he was right. So, I said I wanted to be Martin's daughter, or Paul, or Jonathan, or Michael. But that old guy said I was being ridiculous and that if I was reincarnated as your daughter, it would mess up the family hierarchy with Susie!"
Clara kept talking and complaining.
Jonathan blinked at her and asked, "Then what happened?"
Clara sighed, "There was nothing I could do. In the end, they just left it up to me to choose without giving me any options."
Jonathan chuckled.
It had to be her, negotiating even when it came to reincarnation.
Clara continued, "Actually, I've been at the Murray family this whole time. My mom makes food for me every day."
Jonathan remembered how Susie used to serve a bowl of food piled high for Clara every day before meals.
He pursed his lips and said after a while, "What else do you want to eat? Tell Jonathan and I'll get it for you."
Clara had to avoid certain foods during her chemotherapy and couldn't eat many things. Now she could eat whatever she wanted, and Jonathan would move heaven and earth to get it for her.
After thinking for a moment, Clara said, "I want to eat deep-fried ice cubes, charcoal-grilled honeycomb plum, supreme six-shrimp noodles...and raw salmon sashimi! And I want Jonathan to make it himself."
She looked at him with nostalgia, still relying on her brother like she did when she was a child.
Jonathan chuckled and had tears in his eyes as he playfully tapped Clara's nose.
"Are you trying to make things difficult for Jonathan?"
Except for the first three dishes, she had probably wanted to eat raw salmon slices earlier.
However, because she was undergoing chemotherapy, she could easily become infected if she wasn't careful.
So, salmon slices were a food that she had begged for many times but never got to eat purely out of her curiosity.
Jonathan thought about this and felt a tinge of sadness in his heart.
The one who was favored always felt secure.
Clara still playfully said, "Will you make it or not? If you don't, I'll ask Martin to make it for me."
Jonathan replied, "I'll make it. I'm not going to work tomorrow, so I'll make it for you."
Clara exclaimed, "Yay! Susie, we'll have delicious food tomorrow!"
Susie, who had not fully woken up, looked confused.
Deep-fried ice balls?
Won't the ice melt when it meets heat?
This is so oily and shady.
Isn't honeycomb coal for burning?
Can you eat it?
The Ultimate Six Shrimp Noodles... Hmm, that sounds delicious!
Susie swallowed her saliva and said softly, "Susie can't wait!"
Clara affectionately kissed her forehead and corrected her, "It's 'can't wait.' Go to sleep now! Kids shouldn't stay up late."
She leaned over the bed and hummed a lullaby to help Susie fall asleep.
Susie held her little rabbit, blinked her eyes and looked at Clara without blinking, her eyes full of a child's attachment to her mother.
Gradually, Susie closed her eyes and fell asleep again.
Clara looked at the little rabbit in her arms.
This little rabbit was the birthday present she gave to Susie when she turned two years old. If she remembered correctly, she bought it for only 25 dollars on the side of the road.
Mitch said that this rabbit had been badly beaten by Andrew before.
The rabbit's ears were also cut off by Susie's stepmother, with the purpose of making Susie cry.
Now this battered rabbit had been carefully repaired by Martin, and there were no signs of damage.
The rabbit fur was also cleaned very cleanly, and the cotton inside was processed in some way, making the rabbit look fluffy and soft.
Susie no longer carried the rabbit wherever she went, she now had enough sense of security.
But when she slept, she would definitely hold it in her arms.
"Sleep well and grow up quickly," Clara whispered. She stood up gently only after Susie was completely asleep.
Although ghosts can't make any sound, she was still as cautious as when she was alive.
Jonathan felt more and more heartbroken as he watched, wondering how Clara got through those two years when they were not around.
When they were in Bishop, Alex once imitated Clara's painful voice, begging Andrew to give her some medicine because she was in pain.
Jonathan couldn't help clenching his fists. His little sister, whom they cherished so much, begged a scumbag for painkillers when she was terminally ill.
Why is this world always so tormenting?
Jonathan's throat was bitter, and he followed Clara out of the door unconsciously.
Clara then asked, "Jonathan, aren't you going to sleep? It's very late."
Jonathan said, "I'm not going to sleep. Let's go to the roof to see the stars, Clara."
That was her favorite thing to do when she was a child, naughty and always climbing onto the roof.
Later on, she never had the chance again!
Clara's eyes lit up, "I'll go call Martin! Jonathan, you go prepare some wine and peanuts...don't let Mom find out!"
As she said that, she excitedly drifted away to Martin's room.
Jonathan stared at her until her figure disappeared before he came to his senses and quietly went to prepare the wine and peanuts.
When she was eighteen years old, he got a jar of flower wine, carefully stored it in the cellar, and thought that if he had the chance to see her get married in this life, he would take out the wine and have a drink with their siblings.
Now, it could be considered...an opportunity...
Susie is in her room.
Suddenly, she opens her eyes and asks, "Is there anything yummy to eat?" The little one immediately gets up and runs out barefoot while holding her rabbit, looking left and right.
She just had a dream that her mom and Uncle Martin were hiding on the roof eating something delicious without telling her.
She can't let them eat without her, so she decides to go upstairs barefoot and quietly.
Martin is sleeping.
Suddenly, he feels something tickling his face, making him itch.
He furrows his brow and opens his eyes.
He then sees a female ghost standing at the foot of his bed.
Her long black hair hangs down in front of her, covering her face.
When she sees him looking, she slowly raises her hand and says, "Big...brother...Martin, let's drink." Martin, who was just startled awake, reacts quickly, and punches her.
With a loud thud, Clara flies out and sticks to the wall with a splat, unable to come off! Clara is confused.
Fortunately, ghosts can't feel pain. Otherwise, wouldn't that punch have knocked her into the afterlife?
